Second: I Corinthians 9 16-19, 22-23

Paul says “I should be punished if I did not preach the Gospel … I have made myself the slave of everyone so as to win as many as I could ….

Gospel: Mark 1 29-39

Jesus heals: firstly Simon’s mother-in-law of a fever, and then many in the town who were suffering diseases or posessed. Then he goes to a lonely place to pray – and then to the neighbouring towns to preach there too.

READINGS

First: Deuteronomy 18:15-20

Moses tells the people that the Lord has promised to raise up a prophet from among them, who will have God’s word put into his mouth.

Psalm: 94

Second: I Corinthians 7:32-35

Paul compares the responsibilities of married vs unmarried men and women – to help the people decide how to live.

Gospel: Mark 1:21-28

Jesus teaches with authority in the Synagogue: a man possessed by an unclean spirit challenges him, and Jesus orders the spirit to leave the man.
